So recently on an American Biogas Council agriculture committee call, Julia Levin, Executive Director of the Bioenergy Association of California voiced something that’s been rattling around in my brain for a while. To paraphrase, she said “California can’t continue to carry water for the rest of the United States” when referring to the end of book and claim for RNG put into any pipeline in the lower 48 to qualify for LCFS credits. Over dependence on the West Coast has prevented maturation of clean energy policies and markets in other states, and rather than cry foul that crack cocaine, aka $100+/MMBtu RNG, is no longer available, how about demanding markets be made for RNG to ensure the long term viability of the industry? Perhaps LL Cool J said it best…Going back to Cali, I don’t think so.

Big oil companies like BP, Shell, Chevron, etc. (for example) who are becoming ever more present by their acquisitions in the RNG sector, can make their own green/turquoise hydrogen & carbon black by buying RNG, in many cases from their own subsidiaries. A project in BC, by FortisBC, Suncor and a vendor of pyrolysis technology is like that. Their methane is bought as RNG and their electricity is from hydro power. I presume that some operations in the hydrogen hub of Texas work like that also.
