COSCO boxes fill up on biofuel in Hong Kong and Fujian
In China, Mainfold Times reports COSCO Shipping Lines bunkered 2,400 metric tonnes of B24 biofuel at Xiamen Ocean Gate Terminal in Fujian and 5,400 metric tonnes at Hong Kong, setting new records in both ports as part of its decarbonization strategy, with no disclosed financial terms.
The COSCO ASIA set the single-refueling record for biofuel oil at Fujian Port, while XIN LOS ANGELES completed the largest biofuel bunkering operation to date at Hong Kong Terminal. The company previously set a national milestone in June 2024, when COSCO ASIA bunkered 3,850 mt of B24 biofuel at Shekou Port, Shenzhen.
B24 biofuel, a blend of 24% biofuel with conventional marine fuel, is being used to reduce lifecycle carbon emissions in COSCO’s fleet and broader supply chain operations. COSCO Shipping Lines, parent to Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL), has been collaborating with partners to substitute fossil fuels with B24 biofuel on select voyages.
The latest biofuel operations come amid broader industry efforts to align with IMO 2030 and 2050 emissions targets. COSCO operates one of the world’s largest container fleets and has signaled that biofuel will remain part of its strategy to meet tightening regulatory requirements across major Asian ports.
