Alabama to slightly increase registration fee for EVs

In Alabama, AL.com reported that drivers of electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles will soon pay more for registration in Alabama.

The report noted that the Rebuild Alabama Act, passed in 2019, requires owners of EVs to pay an additional registration fee of $200. Owners of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles are required to pay $100.

Those fees went into effect January 1, 2020 with a $3 increase beginning July 1 and then every fourth year, bumping the current fees to $203 and $103.

The report also noted that Alabama is seeing an increase in the number of EVs. From 2020 to 2021, new electric vehicle registrations in Alabama increased by 60%

Currently, there are just 2.3 electric vehicle charging stations per 10,000 registered vehicles in Alabama, far behind the national average of 9.7 outlets per 10,000 vehicles.
