LG Chem and ENI explore South Korea biorefinery

In Seoul, chemical producer LG Chem and Italy’s Eni Sustainable Mobility are conducting technical and economic assessments of a potential biorefinery at LG Chem’s Daesan chemical complex.

The prospective biorefinery would meet burgeoning demand for sustainable fuels and plastics produced through low-carbon processes. It would be designed to process approximately 400,000 tons of bio-feedstocks annually using Eni’s pioneering Ecofining™ process, a technology developed in collaboration with Honeywell UOP. The biorefinery would accommodate various renewable bio-feedstocks and produce a range of products, including Sustainable Aviation Fuel, Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil, and bio-naphtha.

Final investment decision is anticipated by 2024, with the biorefinery slated for completion by 2026. The facility would be integrated into LG Chem’s existing petrochemical complex at Daesan, tapping into its value chain and making use of existing utilities and resources.
