Fur baby milestone: EU registers Bene Meat’s lab-grown pet food

In Prague, Bene Meat has claimed the first European Union registration for lab-grown pet food, which it aims to launch in 2024 after scaling production to several metric tons per day.

“Right now, we are in the order of kilograms per day,” Managing Director Roman Kriz told Reuters. “We expect that during next year we will get to the level of hundreds of kilograms to single tonnes every day.”

The company has also reduced costs to the point that its dog and cat food can be sold at prices on par with premium and super-premium pet food currently on the market. Eventually, Bene Meat hopes to expand into meat for human consumption.

Bene Meat’s announcement comes after Upside Foods and Good Meat won regulatory approval for their cultivated meat products in the US in June. Singapore has also approved cultivated meat for human consumption.
